The Challenge

A company operating in the Electric Automotive sector needed to perform a particularly delicate machining operation on aluminium, a material widely used in this field for its low specific weight, a characteristic that makes it ideal for automotive components focused on the energy efficiency of electric vehicles.

The complexity of the request did not concern the material alone, but the very nature of the required machining operation: the customer needed to produce, in a pull-boring (tension) operation, a small-diameter hole with hundredth-of-a-millimetre tolerance, while ensuring concentricity with a previously machined hole, with no possibility of repositioning the workpiece. This operating condition represented a significant critical factor, since any alignment error or vibration during machining would have irreparably compromised both the required dimensional tolerance and the coaxiality between the two holes, with no margin for correction through repositioning.

The Solution

To meet this highly specific requirement, RIECO proposed a standard RIECO micro-adjustable boring head, with a Modular 50 interface, equipped with an anti-vibration metal boring bar.

The key elements of the solution were:

  • Standard RIECO micro-adjustable boring head: the tool’s micro-adjustability allowed precise intervention on the hole dimension, achieving the hundredth-of-a-millimetre tolerance required by the customer.
  • Anti-vibration metal boring bar: the use of this type of boring bar helped contain vibration during the pull-boring operation, a critical factor when machining a small-diameter hole with strict dimensional requirements.
  • Modular 50 interface: the modular interface ensured the tool’s connection to the spindle-machine system.

The Result

Thanks to the RIECO solution, the customer achieved the required hundredth-of-a-millimetre precision on the small-diameter hole, together with the necessary coaxiality with the previously machined hole, all accomplished in a single pull-boring operation without repositioning the workpiece. The result confirmed the reliability of the RIECO micro-adjustable boring head even in the most demanding applications in terms of dimensional and geometric tolerances, typical of the Electric Automotive sector.
