Alta produttività su Inconel 718: la soluzione di baratura Rieco per l’aerospaziale

The Challenge

A company operating in the aerospace sector needed to machine Inconel 718, a nickel-based superalloy known for its high mechanical and thermal strength—properties that make it a particularly demanding material to machine on cutting tool systems. Precisely because of these intrinsic properties—high hardness and resistance to heat even at the elevated temperatures generated during chip removal—Inconel 718 is widely used in critical aerospace applications, but it requires tooling solutions capable of ensuring stability and precision without compromising production times.

The customer’s primary requirement was clear: achieve very high productivity while maintaining process reliability on a material notoriously difficult to machine.

The Solution

To meet this requirement, RIECO developed a boring bar solution with an ISO50 tool holder interface, mounted on a milling adapter, specifically engineered to guarantee maximum performance even under the demanding machining conditions required by Inconel 718.

The solution was based on three key elements

  • Balanced boring bar body in Ergal: choosing this material for the tool body resulted in a lightweight, balanced component—an essential factor for maintaining stability and precision during machining.
  • Adjustable cartridges: the adjustability of the cartridges allowed for greater operational flexibility, enabling
precise calibration according to specific machining requirements.
  • ISO inserts: the use of standardised ISO inserts ensured compatibility, reliability and ease of replacement
    throughout the production process.

The Result

Implementing the RIECO solution led to a 150% improvement in cycle time, a result that fully met the customer’s need for very high productivity when machining Inconel 718, confirming the effectiveness of combining a balanced body, adjustable cartridges and ISO inserts even in the most demanding aerospace applications.
